Daisy Lynum Retires - All Foolishness Aside... Oh wait, Here Comes Juan

CircusTentby Lawrence A. Robinson
Looks like we got an apprentice Circus Ringmaster in the making by the name of Juan Lynum. Yeah, the man child of Orlando City Commissioner Daisy Lynum.

What a show we got going on here. According to Orlando Sentinel, Daisy only turned in the necessary paperwork and paid the nonrefundable $1,481 filing fee to seek re-election just three days ago. Now, Juan decides to run against his own beloved mom?

Is this the mom who he called in the middle of the night to saved him from the claws of a 'white boy' cop who pulled him over to give him a traffic ticket? Yeah, that's the mom, City Commissioner Daisy Lynum.

But wait, Juan said he and mom shared a home here in Orlando. You would think that he would have known that mom was shelling out $1,481 filing fee just three days before he did the same thing, to run against her. So he waits till both of them pays the fee, then he tries to dissuade mom from running. Is this what he calls fiscal responsibility?

Yeah, big tent, center ring, circus time. Bring on the dog and pony show.

Social media is going wild with comments. The would be Lynum dynasty is the talk of the town. From Daisy just two days ago, calling a town hall meeting then running from the cameras, to Juan filing papers and then nowhere to be found to give comments on his mom bashing decision.

Wow, what a show this is gonna be.

Lynum vs Lynum: Commissioner's son files to run against mother

Juan Lynum, 38, said he had planned to run for judge. But during a strategy meeting Thursday night, he said, he and his advisers decided serving on City Council would allow him to have a bigger impact on the district.

The meeting was at the home he shares with his mother.

But it's not clear whether Daisy Lynum, 67, agreed to step out of the race. She turned in the necessary paperwork and paid the nonrefundable $1,481 filing fee to seek re-election just three days ago.

Juan Lynum denied any political machinations were involved in his entry in the race. He said his mother did not file for re-election to scare away potential opponents, clearing the way for her son.

Daisy Lynum's son says he's running for his mother's council seat

Lynum's career has been full of controversy. In 2006, Channel 9 reported Lynum had called Orlando's police chief to get her son out of a traffic citation.

Two years later, officials found Lynum let her son use her city pass to rack up more than $2,000 worth of free parking.

And in 2011, Lynum was accused of using her influence to help her son's clients win a city contract.

Channel 9 reached out to both Juan and Daisy Lynum but have not heard back.

****** Scary, isn't?

****** Well it's something that the voters have to decide in 60 DAYS...where it matters to the DEC is that whomever prevails has a responsibility to this Party to do more than just have 'auto' membership to the Party and to promote TRUE Democratic values

****** I have to say the timing of this and the lack of advance notice makes me uncomfortable.

****** Wow!

****** unbelievable

****** Is she treating this elected office as her "little kingdom" to be so pretentious as to appoint her successor?…..Will the voters of D-5 take this pretension laying down or will they tell this pompous politician enough is enough?

****** Juan claimed that he could speak Spanish to the Kerry Campaign

in 2004. He was asked to translate a Spanish language question and fell on his face as he did not. His style is to pretend. He pretends to be a resident of District 5, living in his Mom's house, but it seems to be common knowledge that he lived in Tampa for the last couple of years. So where does he live and is he legally eligible to run given that Orlando requires residence in the District for a year before taking office? Somebody needs to dig.

****** It would be great to have a REAL dem in the seat that understands the value of that seat's clout in other fall elections which have a number of contested seats that are strategic to overwhelming a Scott reelection and advancement of more RNC candidates in the Florida Legislature...Orlando Council should be a priority of the Party to gain a strongly partisan supporter and one that can help our messaging to resonate in the low turn out and pivotal District 5

****** The city Clerk must be held accountable for that validation if those accusations are true ******

****** Well some interested person needs to raise the issue.

****** why do you feel he hasn't lived In the district! The person who told you needs to raise those questions! Enough hearing chittlin circuit news! Time to call people out and time to stop hiding behind the chittlin circuit!

****** It strikes me as interesting that he lives in Orlando while working in Tampa. I know personally that he can't speak Spanish with any fluency. But here is what his web-site says: "He worked with BMS in Spain, where he studied and became fluent in Spanish". And it also says: "He teaches business law, business communications, and international business as an adjunct business instructor at Hillsborough Community College." Tough to do if you live in Orlando. But the firm site also says "Founded in 2006, the firm is led by Attorney E.J. Lynum with principal offices in Orlando, Florida." On his own web-site also is a story from Tampa TV in which he is filmed and LABELED "Tampa Resident"......so maybe he moved back recently; when? Orlando has taken this issue very seriously in the past. Here is the story: http://www.myfoxtampabay.com/.../tampas-blueprint-for-the...

Tampa's blueprint for the future
www.myfoxtampabay.com
If you think Tampa's changed over the last few years, just imagine what it'll look like in another 20.

****** He also says that his office is on Sand Lake Road in Orlando, so maybe he does work here. and there are about three other business addresses in Orlando.

****** I can't understand why people are always so negative in regards to others. When you are throwing stones against someone make sure that the stones will not hit you in the face. Any one can run for office if they choose and your choice is to vote for who you want. Use your vote and not your negativity!!!!

****** ****** - I objected to the residence ordinance passed by the City of Orlando in 2004. I think it is nonsense. But several people have been told that they cannot run in the past because of that requirement. The circumstances under which Juan emerged as a candidate are tortured and indicate (in my view) that some people believe in inherited office. This is not throwing stones, it is raising a legit issue on which there is differing information and voters deserve to know the answers. I know some strong former elected officials who believe very strongly that Orlando's Black Community deserves stronger representation. Filing fifteen minutes before a race closes while your Mom, who is in a strong position to win as the incumbent and while she withdraws, is a sorry way to begin a campaign. If Juan wanted to run and had filed to run weeks ago, I would probably ask the same questions, but be much more sympathetic to his ambition.

****** I know that I've asked this question before, but I will ask again. Does the DEC monitor any instances like this and voice an opinion?

****** ****** my post was not directed to you but to anyone that is always negative. I stand firm on people voting on who they want to serve them. You can say whatever you want to say that is your right and my right is my VOTE!!!!!

****** Nope. Not in my experience, unless the persons ask for endorsements, which are considered improper unless the DEC has a lot more, and more diverse membership. Both of the other Candidates have joined the DEC, while Juan has not, so that might be a consideration.

****** We also have a system of qualifying. It requires residence and that requirement has been taken very seriously in the past. AS Juan is running, I expect him to certify that he has been a resident of the District for the past year and that will do the deal. The issue of proven residence is now being discussed for reforms in Tallahassee and I think it is an important one as long as it is on the books, though I would repeal it tomorrow if I had the vote.

******Facts are no matter how he decided to run he is running and was approved by the clerk! At this point they have approved him to run! Your issue about his housing should be taken up with the clerk! As far as his motive to run... We all have had change of hearts one time or other in our lives. And like he stated he wanted to run for judge and announced it! We need to focus on the community, the issues and where the candidates stands on these issues! Anything other than that is dirty politics! Messiness and down right a distraction on the issue at hand!

****** I can hardly wait until we get into the issues with an early and full and well publicized debate. I trust there will be one.

More FaceBook Comments

****** IS he really a resident of the District? That is a requirement.

****** Stop the madness! No more Lynum's in Orlando/Orange County politics...please.

****** It's not HER seat. It's the city seat she now holds. I think both of them are confused about that.

****** This will be amusing, but only because I don't live in that district. If I did, I wouldn't want to represented by either of the Lynums.

****** Someone help me understand, is this the son Mrs. Lynum called in a special phone request for -- to the police chief -- one early a.m.? If so, a-m-a-z-i-n-g.

****** ****** That's Ok he used his resources because he did what Zimmerman and any white son would have done. But will he do a better job then his Mom would be the real question?

****** Well, with any hope we won't have to find out and Regina Hill will be elected.

****** LOL! It was just a question

****** Sure i believe that he lives with his Mama while his wife and kids live in Tampa. I do believe, Ido,Ido,ido!

****** what will be the ocdec position on this race? with the city election close at hand, and the next meeting coming soon, ******, does the party have an obligation to support the incumbent?

****** Good question ******. ****** do they have to support her or her son? I would think at this point the party should probably cut ties with all of the Lynums.

****** Not speaking for any other Union but I know that I am telling all of my members that live in District 5 to vote for Regina Hill. Having someone who has the courage to face their past and use that to strengthen their character instead of running away from it shows a true honesty and courage we all need in public office!
